Athletics

The Inter-school Athletics Program provides opportunities to participate in a team in competitive sports with students from other international schools through ISAC, ACAMIS and APAC.

Sports Leagues

ISAC (International School Athletics Conference)
The ISAC Conference is our local Beijing and Tianjin conference offering a schedule of friendly games, exchanges, league games and tournaments in and around Beijing.

ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools)

The ACAMIS competitions are scheduled as ‘Tournaments’ where teams from ALL of the schools in each league come together to compete in an event.  WAB competes in Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer in a division with 5 other schools from across China:

APAC (Asia Pacific Activities Conference)

The APAC competitions are scheduled as ‘Tournaments’ where teams from ALL of the schools in each league come together to compete in an event. Due to popularity and administration of some sports, APAC sports tournaments are either Divisional or Conference based, with the Conference events open to all APAC member schools. Divisional groupings are arranged according to a three year rotational schedule which will allow each school in compete against all other members schools during this period. For 2009-2010, the APAC Divisions are as follows;

APAC Divisional Sports Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis. APAC Conference Sports include Badminton, Rugby, Swimming and Athletics.

MS Participation

Grade 6, 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to join various sport teams and play friendly interschool games during respective seasons. An end of season ISAC carnival or tournament is held for each sport.

HS Participation

Grade 9,10, 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to try out for respective sport teams and compete in leagues or friendly competition with an end of season tournament. Most teams will compete in ISAC end of season tournaments. The Varsity volleyball, basketball and soccer teams who do not compete in ISAC will compete in an alternative local tournament appropriate to their standard. Varsity teams will compete in either APAC or ACAMIS events. Junoir Varsity teams may compete in ACAMIS events.

Player Commitment

Students are expected to participate fully in all training and practice sessions and competitions.  Each sports team has its own uniform that is worn in competitions.  Families of High School students participating in ACAMIS and APAC exchange programs are required to assist with hosting visiting student athletes when it is WAB’s responsibility to host events. Such times in 2009-2010 include the Beijing Challenge Volleyball Tournament (October 9-11), APAC Volleyball Tournament (October 21-25), Beijing Challenge Basketball Tournament (December 11-13), APAC Theatre Festival (February 24-28) and the APAC Badminton Tournament (April 14-18).

Uniforms MS

MS students will be issued on loan team shirts to wear for competitions. Students will also be able to purchase personalized team shirts at their own expense.  The WAB PE Kit can be worn at training sessions and the WAB Tracksuit should be worn for travel to competitions.  The WAB PE Kit and Tracksuit are provided to all students as part of the school fees with distribution coordinated by the PTA.  Tracksuits are customized with student’s name and orders are placed during the second week of school.

Uniforms HS

HS students in Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer will be issued home and away uniforms. A deposit for uniforms must be lodged with Mr. Liu at this time. The deposit will be returned when uniforms are returned in good order at the end of the season.
Rugby, tennis, table tennis and badminton uniforms must be purchased.

Transport

A limited 5.30pm after school bus service is provided each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon and is available for students training for inter-school sports.  A 7:00pm restricted bus servicer will be provided on Mondays for Volleyball and Basketball players who train late, Travel to and from competitions in the ISAC League (Beijing/Tianjin) is provided by WAB.  HS students must be prepared for late match completion times during ISAC league play and are expected to be able to arrange their own private travel arrangements on match days should they miss the 5:30 pm bus service. Travel and Accommodation for HS Sports Competitions in the ACAMIS and APAC Leagues are at student’s own expense.

Sports Coaching

Each of the sports is coordinated by a Head Coach and each team is managed by a Team Coach. Detailed communication on training sessions, travel etc. is provided through either the Head Coach or the Team Coach. Each student is provided with an ‘Athletes Guide’ that includes Competition Schedules, Procedures and Expectations. The WABX website also contains an information page including match schedule for each team.
